As part of the MIRELAI programme, each Doctoral Candidate (DC) has the unique opportunity to engage in a one-month research exchange with a partnering institution. At the end of 2024, I, Zihan, had the privilege of joining IMEC, a world-renowned research hub in Belgium, for an enriching short-term exchange. This experience allowed me to collaborate with IMEC’s exceptional researchers, mentors, and fellow DCs, immersing myself in its dynamic research environment.
IMEC stands at the forefront of Europe’s semiconductor innovation, seamlessly bridging academia and industry. With state-of-the-art laboratories, cutting-edge equipment from top semiconductor companies, and a highly collaborative culture, IMEC enables researchers to rapidly test, refine, and implement breakthrough ideas. This unique ecosystem fosters both academic excellence and industrial advancements, making IMEC a key driver of semiconductor innovation.
A key takeaway from my time at IMEC was its efficiency in knowledge sharing and interdisciplinary collaboration. Experimental results and ideas flow seamlessly across departments, creating a synergistic research environment. My own project focuses on thermal management of power semiconductors, and during my stay, I was inspired by insights from various fields, demonstrating the growing convergence of AI and semiconductor technologies. The open exchange of knowledge at IMEC highlights the importance of multidisciplinary discussions in driving technological progress.
Beyond academia, my time in Leuven was equally rewarding. With the guidance of my mentors and fellow DCs, I gained a deeper appreciation for the rich history and culture of this charming city. However, as someone coming from the Netherlands, I couldn’t help but notice that Leuven’s cycling infrastructure could benefit from some expansion!
This one-month exchange at IMEC was an invaluable experience that broadened my academic horizons, strengthened my research network, and provided fresh perspectives for my work. I am truly grateful to the MIRELAI programme and IMEC for this opportunity, and I look forward to applying the knowledge gained in my future research.
