Introducing the Second Edition of the MIRELAI Newsletter

We are delighted to present the second edition of the MIRELAI Newsletter, continuing our mission to showcase the collaborative achievements, scientific advancements, and innovative spirit driving the MIRELAI network. This edition celebrates the progress made by our doctoral researchers and partners in shaping the future of microelectronics reliability through the integration of artificial intelligence, digital twin technology, and physics-based modelling.

In this issue, we highlight the latest developments in microelectronic system reliability, where AI and advanced simulations are redefining how we predict and prevent failure mechanisms. The feature article, “MIRELAI: A Vision for the Future of Microelectronics Reliability”, offers an inspiring overview of how MIRELAI is bridging the gap between academia and industry by empowering the next generation of researchers through hands-on, multidisciplinary training.

We also take a closer look at the secondment experiences of our doctoral candidates, from Muhammad Musadiq’s data-driven research journey at PCCL to Vikram’s exploration of microvia reliability at TU Delft. Their stories reflect the value of collaboration, mentorship, and cross-institutional learning in advancing both personal and professional growth.

This edition further features Qiulin’s reflective piece on evolving from a research novice to an independent thinker, highlighting the intellectual transformation that comes with mastering machine learning and data analysis. In addition, Marco’s thought article introduces a groundbreaking hybrid modelling approach that combines physics-based and data-driven methods using Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) to enhance degradation prediction accuracy in printed circuit boards.

Finally, Matteo’s work on Thermal Virtual Sensing (TVS) demonstrates how Digital Twins can be leveraged to improve temperature monitoring and remaining useful life prediction in complex electronic systems – a major step forward for predictive maintenance in microelectronics.

We are proud to share these remarkable achievements that showcase the MIRELAI vision of innovation through collaboration.
